The German football league has announced that it will host the FIFA World Cup in 2026, making Germany the first country to host three tournaments in the same calendar year.

The tournament is set to be held from June 17 to July 18, 2026 and will feature 48 teams from across the world. The announcement was made by the German Football Association (DFB) during a press conference on Tuesday.

"This is a historic moment for our nation," said DFB president Reinhard Grindel. "We are proud to be able to host one of the most prestigious events in international sport."

The decision to host the tournament was based on a number of factors including the growth of football in Germany, the popularity of the sport, and the desire to showcase the best football talent from around the world.

"The FIFA World Cup is not just a sporting event, it's also an opportunity to bring people together and celebrate what we all love about football," said Grindel.

The tournament will see some of the biggest names in football competing against each other, with teams from Europe, South America, Africa, Asia and Oceania taking part.
